A hantour is a horse drawn carriage brought into use in Egypt during the Victorian era. The wonderful thing about this song is that it invents a new word, hantar. This word is turned into a verb and conjugated, or an adverb as a description of the subject. It means to sway back and forth like the motion of a carriage, or a horse. The young man waves down a carriage and daydreams about riding it with his sweetheart. The reference to holding her hand while crossing the street has to do with an excuse for her to touch him in public. Good girls don't have physical contact with men unless they are engaged. For those of you who were at the Fifi workshop in Dallas May 2007, you will remember she kept kissing her hand at one point. That was what she was reenacting... |
